Rifaat al-Assad, former Syrian military leader and uncle of Bashar al-Assad, died at 88 in the UAE after fleeing Syria post-2024 ouster.
Rifaat al-Assad, the uncle of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and a key figure in the country’s military and political elite, has died at age 88 in the United Arab Emirates.
He was known as the “Butcher of Hama” for leading the 1982 government crackdown on an Islamist uprising, which resulted in thousands of deaths.
After a failed coup attempt in the 1980s, he went into exile, living in Europe and amassing wealth, while facing war crimes and financial crimes charges in France, Switzerland, and other countries.
In 2020, a French court convicted him of money laundering and ordered the seizure of over €100 million in assets.
He returned to Syria in 2021 to avoid imprisonment, fled after Bashar al-Assad’s ouster in late 2024, and was last seen in Lebanon before moving to the UAE, where he died after a brief illness.
