Pakistan passes law letting lawmakers hide assets for a year if threatened, shifting election disputes to a new court.
Pakistan's National Assembly passed a bill allowing lawmakers to temporarily withhold their asset disclosures for up to one year if they face credible security threats, citing safety concerns.
The amendment, which updates the Elections Act, permits the speaker of the National Assembly or Senate chairman to approve confidentiality upon written request, with records still submitted to the Election Commission of Pakistan.
It also shifts election dispute jurisdiction from the Supreme Court to the Federal Constitutional Court.
While supporters say the change balances transparency with personal security, critics warn it may hinder accountability and fuel corruption concerns.
The bill now moves to the Senate for further review.
