The error, identified in mid-October, disproportionately affected Northern Ireland residents and caused widespread disruption.
By early 2026, HMRC had reinstated payments for nearly 17,100 cases, confirmed 1,109 as non-compliant, and left about 5,600 under review.
The department has since paused the rollout, added safeguards, and launched a fraud prevention center amid a separate £56.7 million PAYE phishing scam.
