A new study by Riverwatch and EuroNatur shows nearly 2,500 kilometers of wild rivers in the Balkans have been lost since 2012 due to hydropower development, dam construction, and sediment extraction.
Over 1,800 small hydropower plants are operational, with more than 3,000 planned, driving a sharp decline in intact river systems—especially in Albania and Bosnia.
In Albania, near-natural river sections fell from 68% to 40%, and Bosnia saw a 23% drop.
Conservation efforts, including protected areas like the Vjosa River national park, have preserved nearly 900 kilometers of rivers, but the region’s pristine waterways remain under severe threat.
