The Met Opera removed creators' names from its scrapped 2023 "Carmen" production due to cost-driven changes, sparking backlash and leading to a revival of the 2009 version.
The Metropolitan Opera has removed the names of the creative team behind its 2023 production of "Carmen" after scrapping automated vehicles—like a red Jaguar and moving pickup trucks—due to high costs and operational issues. The changes, made without negotiation, sparked backlash from director Carrie Cracknell and set designer Michael Levine, who cited contract violations and artistic integrity concerns. Other key designers also withdrew their names, leaving only revival stage director Melanie Bacaling listed. The Met plans to revive the 2009 production by Richard Eyre. The decision comes amid broader financial cuts, including 22 layoffs, pay reductions, and fewer operas, aimed at saving $15 million this year and $25 million in 2026–27.
