A large Nordic study of over 170,000 people finds no link between long-term use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) or other acid-reducing drugs and increased stomach cancer risk, offering reassurance for patients.
Analyzing data from 1994 to 2020 across five countries, researchers compared 17,232 cancer cases with 172,297 controls, adjusting for age, sex, H. pylori treatment, smoking, obesity, and other factors.
The study, published in The BMJ, concludes current evidence does not support a connection between PPIs and stomach cancer, despite earlier concerns.
