Kenya’s court ordered Worldcoin to delete biometric data collected without consent, and the company complied by January 2026.
Kenya’s High Court ruled in May 2025 that Worldcoin’s collection of biometric data from Kenyans was unlawful, leading to the deletion of all iris scans and facial images collected during public sign-ups from 2021 to 2023.
The Office of the Data Protection Commissioner confirmed on January 20, 2026, that Tools For Humanity, the company behind Worldcoin, had fully complied with the court order under regulatory supervision.
The ruling cited violations of Kenya’s Data Protection Act 2019, including failure to conduct a required impact assessment and obtain valid consent.
The project, which offered 25 Bitcoin tokens in exchange for data, was suspended in August 2023 over privacy concerns.
Civil society groups hailed the decision as a landmark for data protection enforcement.
