Iqbal Singh Chahal, a senior IAS officer and former BMC chief, has been appointed chairman of Maharashtra’s Mumbai Police Housing Township Project, effective February 1, 2026, following his retirement.
The project aims to build nearly 45,000 housing units for police personnel and families across 50 million square feet of land, with a budget of Rs 20,000 crore.
Chahal, who will hold the rank and status of a Minister of State, will lead land acquisition, infrastructure development, and multi-agency coordination.
His appointment highlights the government’s focus on experienced leadership for the complex, large-scale initiative.
