India's Vizhinjam Port expands to handle 5 million containers annually, with major upgrades starting Jan. 24, 2026.
The second phase of the Vizhinjam International Seaport in Kerala, set to begin January 24, 2026, will expand its container capacity from 1 million to 5 million TEUs annually, extend the berth to 2,000 meters, and lengthen the breakwater to 4 km.
With a ₹9,700 crore investment by Adani Vizhinjam Port Pvt.
Ltd., the project will add a railway yard, liquid terminal, tank farm, and 55 hectares of reclaimed land, enabling four ultra-large vessels to dock simultaneously.
The port, already handling 1.5 million TEUs from 710 vessels, aims to become India’s largest straight-berth port and a major transshipment hub, with completion targeted by 2028.
