India launches mobile stroke units in Assam, cutting treatment time from 24 to 2 hours.
India has become the second country to integrate Mobile Stroke Units (MSUs) into its emergency medical system, with two units handed over to Assam on January 22, 2026.
Equipped with CT scanners, telemedicine, labs, and clot-busting drugs, the MSUs enable rapid stroke diagnosis and treatment near patients’ homes, cutting response time from 24 hours to about two hours.
The initiative, led by the Indian Council of Medical Research, aims to reduce stroke deaths and disability, especially in remote Northeast regions.
Since 2021, the units have responded to over 2,300 calls, treating 90% of patients at home.
They are linked to the 108 emergency service and integrated with stroke care centers in Assam, supporting a scalable model for expanding emergency stroke care nationwide.
