Idaho proposes constitutional ban on selling federal lands, keeping them in trust for education and public use.
Idaho State Senator Ben Adams has introduced a constitutional amendment to prevent the state from selling public lands acquired from the federal government, aiming to place them in a perpetual trust managed by the State Board of Land Commissioners.
The trust would use revenues for land maintenance, county compensation, public access improvements, and K-12 education.
The proposal, which passed unanimously out of the Senate State Affairs Committee, requires a two-thirds legislative vote to reach the 2026 ballot and a simple majority to pass.
It excludes Idaho’s 2.5 million acres of endowment land, which remain eligible for sale.
The amendment reflects growing bipartisan concern over protecting public lands amid national debates on federal land management.
