A former bank director admitted stealing food and alcohol from a Sainsbury’s, citing addiction, and was given a community order and rehab requirement.
Simon Tye, a 48-year-old former Lloyds Bank director, admitted stealing over £1,000 in alcohol and food from a Colchester Sainsbury’s across five incidents in August 2025, citing long-term alcohol and drug addiction.
Though he had no criminal record for 24 years, prosecutors noted his 2001 conviction was unrelated.
At Colchester Magistrates’ Court, he received a one-year community order, 20 rehabilitation days, a drug rehab requirement, a one-year exclusion from Colchester, and must pay £1,018 in compensation.
The court acknowledged his prior good character and stressed recovery from addiction as vital to preventing future offenses.
