Choreographer Murtala and dancer O’Sullivan premiere their healing dance works at Sydney Festival, honoring trauma and identity after years of hardship.
Choreographer Murtala, inspired by the 2004 Aceh tsunami, created a healing dance program for thousands of children, later meeting dancer Alfira O’Sullivan through the initiative.
Their artistic and personal partnership culminates in the double bill Sisa-Sisa at Sydney Festival, featuring Murtala’s Gelumbang Raya and O’Sullivan’s Jejak & Bisik, which explores motherhood and identity.
Despite disillusionment with aid corruption and systemic barriers in Australia, including financial hardship and limited recognition, their work gains long-overdue acknowledgment at Bankstown Arts Centre on January 23 and 24, 2026.
