Austrian ex-spy Egisto Ott stands trial in Vienna over alleged 2015–2022 spying for Russia, accused of leaking sensitive data and aiding fugitive Jan Marsalek.
Egisto Ott, a 63-year-old former Austrian intelligence official, is on trial in Vienna on charges of spying for Russia between 2015 and 2022, accused of passing sensitive data, devices, and personal information to Russian intelligence and fugitive Wirecard executive Jan Marsalek, who is suspected of working for Russia’s FSB.
Prosecutors allege Ott accessed European databases, copied phones from senior officials, and handed over an encrypted EU security laptop sold to Iran, endangering lives and damaging Austria’s intelligence ties.
Ott denies all charges and was previously acquitted in 2025 of related leaks.
The trial began January 22, 2026, with a potential five-year prison sentence if convicted.
In a related case, former far-right MP Thomas Schellenbacher faces charges for allegedly helping Marsalek flee to Belarus.
