Tamela Peterson, 59, former CEO of The Oxford Center in Troy, was arraigned on January 20, 2026, on nine felony counts of healthcare fraud related to false billing for unprovided services, including autism therapy, stemming from an investigation that began in 2022.
She faces additional charges of second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter in connection with a January 2025 hyperbaric chamber explosion that killed 5-year-old Thomas Cooper and injured his mother.
Prosecutors allege safety violations, including improper grounding and use of synthetic materials, and that Peterson personally benefited from the fraud.
Four others are also charged.
Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel emphasized the broader impact of healthcare fraud on patients and costs.
Peterson was granted a $10,000 bond and is scheduled for a probable cause hearing on January 27.
