On January 20, 2026, protesters in Augusta, Maine, held a somber demonstration outside the Edmund S. Muskie Federal Building to mark the first anniversary of President Trump’s second inauguration.
Organized by Indivisible Mid-Maine and led by Colby College professor Elizabeth Leonard, the “Stop the Killing” protest highlighted concerns over policies linked to global deaths, including cuts to USAID estimated to have caused over 750,000 deaths worldwide, more than half of them children.
Demonstrators also condemned U.S. military strikes on suspected drug-smuggling vessels, calling them unlawful and responsible for over 100 deaths.
Protesters, dressed in black and carrying gravestone-like signs, delivered a two-page letter to Senators Susan Collins and Angus King, urging accountability and nonviolent resistance.
The event was part of a broader series of actions focused on economic justice, democracy, and foreign policy.
