A Miami judge delayed Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick’s arraignment to Feb. 3 amid ongoing legal representation issues.
A federal judge in Miami has delayed the arraignment of U.S. Representative Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, D-Fla., to February 3, granting her defense team two more weeks to finalize legal representation.
She faces 15 federal charges, including theft of government funds, money laundering, and straw donor violations, stemming from allegations that her family’s health care company, Trinity Healthcare Services, wrongfully kept $5 million in COVID-19 pandemic funds meant for vaccine registration.
Prosecutors say over $100,000 was spent on luxury items, including a 3-carat yellow diamond ring, and funds were funneled to friends and relatives who donated to her campaign.
Cherfilus-McCormick, who won a special election in January 2022, has pleaded not guilty and was released on a $60,000 bond with travel restrictions but retains her congressional passport for official duties.
Prosecutors did not object to the delay.
