Liberia's STAND accuses government of rising rights abuses, police brutality, and selective justice, vowing civil disobedience.
STAND, a Liberian civil rights group, accused President Joseph Boakai’s government in January 2026 of escalating human rights abuses, including police brutality, selective justice, and suppression of dissent.
The group condemned the Liberia National Police for clearing a suspect in a rape case based on DNA evidence while pursuing others without such proof, calling the practice discriminatory.
It also criticized violent crackdowns on protesters, arbitrary arrests, and the use of provocateurs, warning these actions undermine democracy and due process.
STAND demanded accountability for security leaders, especially the Inspector General of Police, and expressed concern over Liberia’s diplomatic alignment with Venezuela, which it says contradicts democratic values.
The group declared a sustained civil disobedience campaign in response.
