Hampshire plans lane rental fees up to £2,500/day to cut traffic, pending UK approval.
Hampshire County Council is pushing forward a "lane rental" scheme that would charge up to £2,500 per day for full road closures and £1,500 for lane closures during peak hours on about 500 busy streets, aiming to reduce congestion and encourage faster, off-peak work.
The plan, which could generate £2.8 million annually, requires final approval from the Department for Transport and, if cleared, could launch later in 2026.
While utility companies have raised concerns over safety, worker fatigue, and potential delays from shifted work hours, the council says the scheme will promote better planning and minimize disruption for residents and businesses.
