Former Albuquerque cop pleads guilty to extorting benefits by rigging DWI cases over 30 years.
Former Albuquerque Police Lieutenant Justin Hunt has pleaded guilty to federal extortion charges for his role in a decades-long scheme involving DWI case manipulation.
He admitted to conspiring with attorneys and officers to stage traffic stops, then skip court appearances in exchange for benefits like free legal services and vehicle upgrades.
The scheme, which spanned nearly 30 years and involved multiple law enforcement agencies, allowed offenders to avoid fines, license revocations, and other penalties.
Hunt, who retired in 2024, is one of at least a dozen individuals, including two defense attorneys, to plead guilty in the ongoing federal investigation into systemic corruption within New Mexico’s DWI enforcement units.
Sentencing has not yet been scheduled.
