DOJ expands probe to Minnesota officials over alleged immigration enforcement obstruction.

Governor Tim Walz and Mayor Jacob Frey of Minneapolis have been subpoenaed in a criminal investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice regarding alleged obstruction of federal immigration enforcement. The investigation comes after increased ICE activity in the state, including arrests in schools and hospitals, which has caused a great deal of anxiety among patients and medical professionals. While employees from immigrant communities fear deportation, medical professionals report that patients are avoiding necessary care, such as prenatal visits and medication. Employees at Hennepin County Medical Center track ICE encounters using encrypted messaging, reporting instances of excessive force. The investigation takes place in the midst of a larger examination of federal spending and state compliance with immigration laws, as well as congressional hearings on fraud in Minnesota's daycare subsidy program.
