The Daily Herald, a suburban Chicago newspaper founded in 1872, has notified Illinois officials of a potential sale, complying with the state’s 2025 Strengthening Community Media Act requiring 120 days’ notice.
The paper, Illinois’ third-largest daily with a circulation of 52,410, is owned by Paddock Publications, which converted it to an employee stock ownership plan in 2018.
The publisher did not name any prospective buyer.
The newspaper continues to operate from a $50 million printing plant in Schaumburg, now used by Tribune Publishing under contract.
The law aims to protect local journalism amid a national decline, with Illinois losing nearly half its local papers since 2005 and the U.S. seeing nearly 3,500 closures in two decades.
