A Calgary man was arrested in Mauritius and extradited to Canada for allegedly abducting his son from Canada in 2023.
A 62-year-old Calgary man, Muhammad Zia-Ur Rahman, was arrested in Mauritius on December 16, 2025, and extradited to Canada on charges of international parental child abduction.
He is accused of taking his five-year-old son from Canada in December 2023, traveling to Turkey, and then evading capture across multiple countries including Russia, Azerbaijan, and Vanuatu using forged documents and property purchases.
The boy, now seven, was returned to Calgary in mid-December and has resumed school, reuniting with his family.
Mauritian authorities aided the investigation, and Rahman remains in custody, facing charges with possible additional ones.
He is scheduled to appear in court on January 22, 2026.
