WA’s EPA backs Valhalla Gas project with up to 20 fracking wells, pending public input and final review.
The Western Australian Environmental Protection Authority has recommended approving Black Mountain Energy’s Valhalla Gas project in the Kimberley, which would involve up to 20 fracking wells in the Canning Basin, pending public appeals through February 10, 2026.
While the EPA says environmental risks can be managed with strict conditions, Indigenous leaders and environmental groups oppose the project, citing threats to the Martuwarra Fitzroy River catchment and cultural heritage.
Although some traditional owner groups support the proposal, Bunuba elder Millie Hills urges a halt and a ban on fracking in the region.
The final decision is pending further review.
