A UK ex-soldier helped lead a €42M cocaine smuggling ring into Ireland, pleading guilty to conspiracy.
A former British soldier, Gary Monks, 41, played a logistical role in a €42 million cocaine smuggling operation into Ireland, the Special Criminal Court has heard.
He was part of a UK-based cell that coordinated the transfer of drugs from a ship off County Clare to County Kerry using an inflatable boat.
Monks, one of seven men who pleaded guilty to drug conspiracy between December 2024 and January 2025, had served in Iraq and Afghanistan and was diagnosed with PTSD after witnessing a car bomb attack.
His defense said he was a mid-level operative driven by financial need and mental health struggles, with no prior criminal record.
Sentencing is pending.
