Togo expelled Burkina Faso’s former leader Damiba, accused of plotting to assassinate current leader Traoré.
Togo expelled Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba, Burkina Faso’s former transitional president, on January 18, 2026, after his arrest on charges of attempted destabilization linked to coup plots against current military leader Captain Ibrahim Traoré.
Damiba, who was overthrown in 2022, was reportedly returned to Ouagadougou, where he faces scrutiny from the junta.
Authorities accuse him of orchestrating a January 3 assassination attempt targeting Traoré and other officials.
Burkina Faso has not issued an official statement, while the junta continues efforts to consolidate power and strengthen military capabilities.
