TikTok videos are fueling a rise in Kia and Hyundai car thefts in Wisconsin’s Fox Valley, prompting police warnings and safety tips.
Fox Crossing Police warn of an ongoing TikTok-inspired car theft trend targeting Kia and Hyundai vehicles in Wisconsin’s Fox Valley area, with recent attempted thefts reported over the past weekends.
The trend, fueled by social media videos showing how to start these cars using a screwdriver and USB cable, prompted Hyundai and Kia to install anti-theft technology in about 9 million vehicles from 2011 to 2022—though the fix has not yet been rolled out in the U.S. An anti-theft software update in 2023 reduced thefts by 64%.
Authorities urge residents to keep vehicles locked, park in secure areas, use aftermarket anti-theft devices, schedule updates, and consider steering wheel locks.
Tips can be submitted to Fox Valley Metro Police or anonymously via Quad Communities Crime Stoppers.
