Sarnia council cancels airport MSC plan due to $2.1M cost, risking leadership gap and commercial flight revival by 2027.
Sarnia city council has reversed its 2025 decision to create a municipal service corporation to operate the Sarnia Chris Hadfield Airport, citing a projected $2.1 million operating cost for the MSC between mid-2027 and 2029.
With the current operator’s contract ending in mid-2027, the airport risks a leadership vacuum after June 30, 2027.
City staff are now reviewing alternatives such as private contracting, direct city management, selling the airport, or forming a not-for-profit entity.
The airport has received up to $400,000 in annual city subsidies since 2021 after Air Canada ended commercial service.
Council members stress the urgency of finding a solution to support regional economic growth and restore commercial flights.
