Diezani Alison-Madueke, Nigeria’s former oil minister and first female OPEC president, appeared in London’s Southwark Crown Court on January 19, 2026, for a preliminary hearing ahead of her trial on bribery charges.
Accused of accepting bribes including cash, luxury vehicles, property, and private jet travel during her 2010–2015 tenure, she faces multiple counts tied to awarding oil and gas contracts.
The UK’s National Crime Agency alleges the bribes were linked to illicit contracts, with a joint Nigeria-U.S. asset return agreement in January 2025 resulting in the recovery of $52.88 million in assets, including a superyacht and luxury properties.
Alison-Madueke, who denies the charges and remains on bail with strict conditions, is set to stand trial on January 26, 2026, alongside two others.
The trial is expected to last 10 to 12 weeks.
