A man was sentenced to life in prison and fined for killing two people in a tree dispute in 2020.
Alphons Saldanha, 52, was sentenced to life imprisonment and fined 200,000 rupees by a Mangaluru court on January 19, 2026, for the 2020 double murder of Vincy and Helen D’Souza in Elinje Village.
The killings occurred during a dispute over tree branches from Saldanha’s property, which escalated into violence when he stabbed Vincy during a meeting and later killed Helen while she tried to help.
The court convicted him under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code, along with charges of criminal intimidation and wrongful restraint, all sentences running concurrently.
A total fine of 2.05 lakh rupees was imposed, with 1 lakh each paid to the victims’ children as compensation and 5,000 remitted to the government.
The case, investigated by Mulki police and prosecuted by Judith Olga Margaret, involved testimony from 24 witnesses and 46 documents.
