The Responsible Nations Index (RNI), launched on January 19, 2026, ranks India 16th out of 154 countries, with Singapore topping the list and the U.S. and China placing 66th and 68th respectively.
Developed by the World Intellectual Foundation with input from Jawaharlal Nehru University and IIM Mumbai, the index evaluates nations on responsibility toward citizens, the environment, and global cooperation, using 58 indicators across three pillars.
It challenges traditional measures of power like GDP, emphasizing ethical governance, sustainability, and inclusive well-being.
Former President Ram Nath Kovind endorsed the initiative, highlighting India’s values of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam and stressing that sovereignty includes duty.
The RNI aims to reshape how national success is measured by prioritizing responsible actions over mere outcomes.
