flag Genova tuna recall expands due to botulism risk from defective lids; no illnesses reported.

Due to a manufacturing flaw in "easy open" pull tab lids that could allow contamination with the botulism-causing bacteria Clostridium botulinum, a recall of Genova brand yellowfin tuna products has grown. On January 19, 2026, the FDA and Tri-Union Seafoods announced the expanded recall, which included additional quantities that a third-party distributor had inadvertently shipped. Products with specific can codes and best-by dates, such as 5.0 oz cans of Genova Yellowfin Tuna in Olive Oil and Extra Virgin Olive Oil with Sea Salt, are impacted. The recalled tuna, which is sold nationwide at Meijer, Giant Foods, and Safeway stores, should not be eaten even if it looks normal. If customers experience symptoms like blurred vision or muscle weakness, they are advised to return or discard the product and seek medical attention. There have been no reports of illnesses.
