Australia has extended the operation of its largest coal-fired power station, Eraring, until 2029 to ensure grid stability amid concerns about aging infrastructure and delays in renewable energy, battery storage, and transmission projects. Origin Energy cited the Australian Energy Market Operator's warnings about system security, claiming that the extension allows time for clean energy infrastructure to come online. The move has sparked criticism from both the state coalition and the Greens, who accuse the Labor government of slowing the energy transition. The site will become a major energy storage hub by 2027, with a 700MW/3,160MWh battery expected to be operational, while supporting local jobs and community programs until 2032.
