As of August 31, 2025, about Rs 5,956 crore in Rs 2000 banknotes remain in circulation in India, down from Rs 3.56 lakh crore at the time of their withdrawal on May 19, 2023, with 98.33% of the notes returned. The notes remain legal tender. The RBI continues to accept them for exchange or deposit into bank accounts at 19 issue offices nationwide, with the option to send them via India Post from any post office.
