Tepco delays Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Unit 6 restart to Feb. 26, 2026, after alarm failure during testing.
Tokyo Electric Power Co. has delayed the restart of the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear plant’s Unit 6, originally set for January 20, 2026, due to a failed alarm system during testing.
The malfunction, which did not trigger when control rods were withdrawn, raised safety concerns, prompting Tepco to postpone the restart until February 26, pending further evaluation.
The plant, Japan’s largest with 8.2 gigawatts of capacity, has been offline since 2012 following the Fukushima disaster.
Although Units 6 and 7 passed safety reviews in 2017, they were later restricted over counterterrorism concerns.
The restart is part of Japan’s push to improve energy security and reduce fossil fuel dependence, but local opposition remains high due to safety fears, evacuation challenges, and distrust in Tepco.
