A Spokane double-decker bus crashed into a viaduct on Jan. 18, 2026, injuring four, after taking a route with insufficient clearance.
A double-decker bus operated by Spokane Transit Authority crashed into a railroad viaduct on Cedar Street in Spokane on Sunday, January 18, 2026, injuring four passengers on the top deck.
The Route 6 bus, traveling from Cheney to the University District, was off its regular route and struck the 12-foot clearance overpass, shearing off part of its second deck.
The bus, 13 feet 6 inches tall, should have used higher-clearance streets.
All injured passengers were hospitalized, with no details on their conditions.
STA crews freed the bus in under two hours, and the agency is investigating the incident, citing it as an “outlier event.” City officials confirmed minor viaduct damage, and STA said the double-decker buses will continue operating normally.
