The parents of 10-year-old Matilda, killed in the December 14, 2025, Bondi Beach terror attack during a Hanukkah event, have spoken publicly for the first time, honoring their daughter’s memory and thanking Natasha Willemsen, a petting zoo worker who saved Matilda’s younger sister Summer.
The sisters, inseparable and often mistaken for twins, were near the petting zoo when gunfire erupted; Matilda died in her yellow sundress, while Summer survived after being shielded by Willemsen.
The family, who moved from Ukraine to Australia, said Matilda was a joyful, athletic girl who loved animals and cartwheels.
They are advocating to rename the park Matilda’s Park, preserve the footbridge where the attack occurred, and avoid rushed hate speech legislation, stressing that criminals ignore such laws.
The family continues to grieve and honor Matilda’s legacy.
