Indonesia’s president nominates his nephew for central bank deputy role, raising independence concerns.
Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has nominated his nephew, Thomas Djiwandono, a U.S.-educated former businessman and deputy finance minister, to become a deputy governor at Bank Indonesia, pending parliamentary approval.
The appointment, expected in February, raises concerns about the central bank’s independence as Prabowo pushes for 8% economic growth by 2029.
Djiwandono, who previously attended policy meetings without voting rights, will replace outgoing board member Juda Agung.
The move follows last year’s burden-sharing agreement that let the central bank support government programs, fueling worries over political influence.
The bank’s next monetary policy review is upcoming.
