In Benin’s January 2026 parliamentary election, opposition parties won no seats as the main opposition party, The Democrats, received 16% of the vote but failed to meet a new 20% national and district threshold.
Pro-government parties, the Progressive Union for Renewal and Republican Bloc, secured 60 and 49 seats respectively.
The electoral code also barred The Democrats from the upcoming April presidential election.
Voter turnout was 36.73%, and results await confirmation by the Constitutional Court.
The vote followed a failed coup in December and comes as President Patrice Talon, barred by term limits, is expected to be succeeded by his ally, Finance Minister Romuald Wadagni.
