Australian artist Ruel wins $50,000 for "The Suburbs" in global songwriting contest.
Australian pop star Ruel has won the $50,000 grand prize in the 2025 Vanda and Young Global Songwriting Competition for his song "The Suburbs," one of over 4,000 entries from 52 countries.
Co-written with M-Phazes and others, the track reflects his desire for a simple, stable life.
The 23-year-old Sydney native, who began performing at 13, called the win a milestone amid his international tour.
Second place went to Ninajirachi for "iPod Touch," and third to Louis Schoorl for "Zombie," performed by Lewis Fitzgerald.
The competition, supporting music therapy, awarded $80,000 total, including $1,000 to ten emerging songwriters.
