The UAE ratified the ILO forced labor protocol, strengthening protections for migrant workers.
The UAE ratified the 2014 ILO Protocol to the Forced Labour Convention on January 15, becoming the 63rd country to do so and the second GCC nation to join.
The move strengthens legal measures against forced labor, human trafficking, debt bondage, and forced domestic work, requiring criminalization of such acts, victim protection, and access to justice.
The protocol takes effect in the UAE one year after ratification.
UAE officials highlighted its commitment to workers’ rights, especially for its large migrant workforce, while the ILO praised the step as progress toward decent work and the UN’s 2030 goals.
The UAE has now ratified nine ILO conventions.
