Tamil Nadu launches a ₹5 lakh literary award in seven non-Hindi languages to promote creative freedom and cultural unity.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K.
Stalin announced the annual Semmozhi Literary Award on January 18, 2026, to honor outstanding literary works in seven non-Hindi languages—Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Odia, Bengali, and Marathi—with a ₹5 lakh prize per language.
The move follows the cancellation of the 2025 Sahitya Akademi Awards, which Stalin attributed to alleged political interference, calling such actions a threat to creative freedom.
The state will fund the award, with independent juries of respected writers ensuring merit-based selection.
Stalin emphasized literature’s role in uniting linguistic communities and highlighted the global reach of the Chennai International Book Fair, which facilitated over 1,800 MoUs, including major translation agreements.
The award is part of Tamil Nadu’s broader cultural initiative under its Dravida Model 2.0 agenda, aiming to promote reading, expand libraries, and strengthen literary exchange.
