Sydney retires aging V-set trains, replacing them with modern Mariyung trains on the Blue Mountains line, with rollout to South Coast line starting April–June 2026.
The V-set trains, known as "steel rattlers," are being retired from Sydney's rail network after serving since the 1970s, with their final runs marking the full rollout of the modern Mariyung intercity trains on the Blue Mountains line.
Originally scheduled for retirement by 2022, delays in the Mariyung rollout kept the V-sets in service beyond their intended lifespan.
The new trains offer enhanced comfort with features like extra legroom, tray tables, and charging ports.
Most V-sets will be scrapped after parts are salvaged.
