New Zealand fixed a school calendar error that nearly shortened the 2027 school year by one day.
A New Zealand Ministry of Education error nearly cut the 2027 school year by one day by omitting the Matariki holiday from term calculations, reducing required half-days from 380 to 378.
To compensate, the start of Term 1 was moved from February 4 to February 3, 2027, approved by Education Minister Erica Stanford in October 2025.
Revised dates were published in the New Zealand Gazette and will be communicated to schools via a February bulletin.
A new checking tool was introduced to prevent future miscalculations.
