Iranian diplomat Alireza Jiranieh Hokambad defected to Switzerland, seeking asylum over fears of persecution amid rising unrest.
A senior Iranian diplomat, Alireza Jiranieh Hokambad, has reportedly defected from Iran and applied for asylum in Switzerland, according to the Iranian opposition outlet Iran International.
Hokambad, who served as minister-counselor—the second-highest rank—in Iran’s Geneva UN delegation since 2017, left his post and sought refuge for himself and his family, citing fears of persecution.
The move comes amid rising tensions over Iran’s domestic unrest and international criticism, with diplomatic sources noting increased anxiety among Iranian envoys abroad.
Several other Iranian officials are reportedly considering asylum, and some European nations may expedite applications.
