India’s first astronaut in 41 years took traditional textile cards into space, symbolizing culture and innovation.
Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, India’s first astronaut in 41 years, carried the 20-gram Dharohar Deck—tactile textile cards showcasing India’s traditional crafts like block printing, ikat, jamdani, and kalamkari—into space aboard NASA’s Axiom-4 mission.
Created by National Institute of Design students, the deck symbolizes the enduring value of India’s textile heritage, linking centuries-old craftsmanship with science, sustainability, and national identity.
Shukla emphasized that cultural roots are essential to progress, calling the mission a statement that tradition and innovation coexist.
The mission launched June 25 from Florida and ended July 15 with a splashdown off California.
