Guam and Pacific groups oppose deep-sea mining near Northern Mariana Islands over environmental and cultural risks.
Sen. Chris Barnett of Guam and multiple Pacific groups, including Prutehi Guahan and the Pacific Indigenous Women's Network, have formally opposed the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management's proposed deep-sea mining leasing near the Northern Mariana Islands.
They cited risks to marine ecosystems, biodiversity, fisheries, and Indigenous cultural sites, urging a precautionary approach, greater scientific review, and meaningful community consultation.
