Alberta’s RCMP leader says federal policing will continue for now despite push for a provincial force.
Alberta’s K-Division RCMP Deputy Commissioner Trevor Daroux reviewed his first year leading the force amid provincial efforts to replace the federal police with a provincial agency.
Despite ongoing pressure from the UCP and Premier Danielle Smith’s Alberta Next Panel, the RCMP continues serving 40% of Albertans across 95% of the province’s land, including key communities.
Daroux highlighted modernization efforts to enhance public safety, noting the current federal-provincial contract remains valid for six more years, with major changes requiring two years’ notice.
The panel, backed by a PwC study, released transition recommendations in late 2025 but deferred decisions on potential referendums.
Daroux emphasized maintaining effective policing during the transition period.
