A 50-year-old school staffer was jailed for four years after exploiting a 14-year-old student sexually.
Tracy Coleman, a 50-year-old educational assistant at St. Mary Catholic Elementary School in Welland, was sentenced to four years in prison for sexual interference and producing sexually explicit material involving a 14-year-old former student.
Judge Deborah Calderwood called the case a "gross violation of trust" by a professional responsible for children's safety.
Coleman, who had no prior criminal record, was banned from working with children under 16, added to the national sex offender registry for 20 years, and found to be of low risk to reoffend.
The abuse occurred over months, with the victim disclosing it after feeling guilt and anxiety, prompting a June 2024 police investigation and her July arrest.
The victim described lasting emotional harm, including anxiety and trust issues.
The Niagara Catholic District School Board said it would fully cooperate with authorities.
