Bheemanna Khandre, a 102-year-old former Karnataka Transport Minister, veteran Congress leader, and freedom fighter, died on January 17, 2026, in Bhalki due to age-related health issues.
A prominent figure in the Kalyana Karnataka region, he served four terms as an MLA, two as a Legislative Council member, and held the transport portfolio under Chief Minister Veerappa Moily.
A lawyer by training, he began public service in 1953 as the first elected president of Bhalki Municipality.
He championed cooperative movements, irrigation projects, and education, founding sugar factories and colleges.
A key figure in the Hyderabad Liberation Movement, he opposed Razakar atrocities and helped secure Bidar’s inclusion in Karnataka.
He also led a major anti-forced sterilization campaign and represented thousands of farmers at a national rally.
Survived by two sons and four daughters, his final rites were held in Bhalki following Veerashaiva Lingayat traditions.
Political leaders across parties expressed condolences.
